This is a unique opportunity to solve complex algorithmic challenges and build a system that learns from every journey, powered by cutting-edge research and high-performance code.\nWhat you’ll be doing:\nDesigning and building a highly customisable engine, with the choice to extend an existing open-source project (like OTP, Graphhopper, Valhalla) or build our own to meet unique product needs.\nDesigning clean, scalable routing APIs and collaborating with backend and mobile engineers to ensure they are robust and easy to use.\nContributing across the stack by applying your engineering skills to our backend services or geospatial data processing pipelines.\nCreating the foundation for our AI-powered personalisation, where edge weights (speed, cost, preference) are dynamically adjusted for each user.\nImplementing complex multi-modal routing logic that can seamlessly combine walking, public transport, and ride-sharing into a single, optimised journey.\nOver time solving for modern transport challenges, such as building Electric Vehicle (EV) routing that intelligently incorporates charging stops, battery levels, and station availability.\nDeveloping and optimising core routing algorithms like A*, Contraction Hierarchies (CH), or other speed-up techniques for continental-scale networks.\nBuilding the testing and verification harness that keeps routing correct such as golden-route regression suites, invariant checks (e.g. triangle inequality, symmetry where expected), and benchmarks that catch performance regressions as the graph and algorithms evolve.\nRequirements:\nA portfolio or GitHub profile showcasing strong projects in algorithms, data structures, or systems programming.\nDeep proficiency in a high-performance language, specifically C++, Java or Rust.\nProven experience implementing and working with graph algorithms, particularly for routing (e.g., Dijkstra, A*, CH, Isochrones).\nFamiliarity with the challenges of routing on real-world data like OpenStreetMap (OSM).\nExperience in API design and a solid understanding of how to build scalable, low-latency web services.\nA \"T-shaped\" or \"tree-shaped\" mentality, with a genuine interest in contributing to different parts of the product.\n3+ years experience in a professional environment with a demonstrable record of shipping production software\nA rigorous approach to correctness and testing, with experience verifying algorithmic output where the \"right answer\" is non-trivial (e.g. regression testing, property-based testing, or validating against a reference implementation).\nWhat you can expect:\nA collaborative and supportive team with short decision-making paths.\nExciting and meaningful projects using modern technologies.\nThe opportunity to contribute your ideas and take ownership of your work.\nCompetitive compensation and opportunities for professional growth.\nA culture that values learning, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.\nGrow with a young, ambitious company that values innovation, initiative, and ownership.\nHave we sparked your interest?     "description": "You will be working on designing and building the geospatial data pipeline that powers our products. As part of our data team you will be heavily involved in our \"ground truth,\" finding and integrating novel datasets, staying ahead of the latest research, and building the high-performance services that bring our map to life. A part of this role also centres on our points-of-interest (POI), geocoding, and search capabilities, the systems that let users find places and turn addresses or names into precise locations.\nWho we’re looking for\nAs a key member of our early-stage team, you will work across our data stack, from raw data sourcing and processing to the APIs that serve it.\nYour primary focus will be on building robust, scalable pipelines to ingest, process, and optimize massive geospatial datasets for our applications.\nYou will also stay on the pulse of the latest geospatial research, experiment with new data sources and algorithms, and collaborate directly with the product team to shape our data strategy.\nWhat you’ll be doing:\nSourcing and integrating foundational datasets from open sources like OpenStreetMap, regional government portals, and commercial providers.\nDesigning and building ETL/ELT pipelines to clean, transform, and load geospatial data into our core database.\nOptimizing data for performance, including generating vector tiles and structuring data for fast, low-latency queries.\nDeveloping and maintaining high-performance APIs in Go to expose our mapping data to our mobile and web applications.\nResearching and implementing cutting-edge techniques in areas like spatial indexing, routing algorithms, POI/address conflation, and geocoding to make our map smarter.\nManaging and scaling our geospatial database infrastructure, likely using PostGIS.\nCollaborating with product and design to understand data requirements and deliver features that delight users.\nBuilding and curating our POI dataset; ingesting, deduplicating, and conflating places from multiple sources into a single authoritative record.\nDesigning forward and reverse geocoding pipelines to translate between addresses, place names, and coordinates with high accuracy.\nDeveloping search and ranking logic (e.g. autocomplete, fuzzy matching, relevance scoring) to return the right result from a partial or messy query.\nRequirements:\nA strong portfolio or GitHub profile showcasing relevant data engineering or backend projects.\nDeep experience with geospatial databases, particularly PostGIS, and a strong command of spatial SQL.\nProficiency in a backend programming language, with a strong preference for Go and Python.\nHands-on experience processing large-scale geospatial datasets (e.g., the full OpenStreetMap planet file).\nFamiliarity with geospatial data formats (e.g., GeoJSON, Shapefile, Protobuf) and tooling (GDAL/OGR).\nExperience with data orchestration (Airflow/Dagster) and cloud infrastructure.\nExperience building or working with geocoding, address parsing, or place-search systems (e.g. Nominatim, Pelias, Photon, or a bespoke pipeline).\nFamiliarity with full-text/search tooling and relevance ranking (e.g. Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, or PostgreSQL FTS) is a plus.\nWhat you can expect:\nA collaborative and supportive team with short decision-making paths.\nExciting and meaningful projects using modern technologies.\nThe opportunity to contribute your ideas and take ownership of your work.\nCompetitive compensation and opportunities for professional growth.\nA culture that values learning, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.\nGrow with a young, ambitious company that values innovation, initiative, and ownership.\nHave we sparked your interest?
