The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 18,500 people, including over 14,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.\nPostdoctoral Researcher in Human Stress, Motivation and Translational Biomarkers\nPerimetre\nSwiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)-funded project on human motivation, stress physiology, immersive behavioral testing, and biological phenotyping.\nThe Laboratory of Behavioral Genetics at EPFL, led by Prof. Carmen Sandi, is seeking an outstanding postdoctoral researcher with a strong technical and quantitative profile to join a SNSF-funded project investigating human motivation and stress responsiveness.\nThe project will develop and validate individually calibrated behavioral tasks in immersive virtual reality (VR) to quantify effort-based motivation, vigor, persistence, and goal-directed versus habitual control. It will then test how acute stress alters these processes, combining behavioral performance, physiological monitoring, movement-based phenotyping, and advanced statistical and computational analyses.\nThis position is part of a broader two-position recruitment linked to the same SNSF-funded project. The present call is for the position focused on human experimental implementation, participant recruitment, psychobiological assessment, biological sampling, and translational biomarker integration. A complementary position will focus more specifically on multimodal sensing, experimental systems, physiological and movement data, and advanced behavioral data analysis.\nThe position is funded for three years. In line with standard EPFL procedures, the contract is issued on a one-year basis and renewable annually, subject to satisfactory progress and institutional regulations.\nProject background\nUnderstanding how stress influences motivated behavior requires experimental approaches that combine rigorous behavioral testing with careful assessment of individual differences and biological stress responses. In this project, participants will complete immersive behavioral tasks designed to measure how they choose, initiate action, sustain effort, adapt to changing contingencies, and respond to acute stress.\nThe study will combine a standardized acute stress manipulation and behavioral assessments in VR, physiological monitoring, and biological sampling. In addition to endocrine measures, we are eventually interested -in the second part of the project implementation- in integrating broader hormonal, metabolic, inflammatory, and mitochondrial-\nrelated biomarkers to better characterize individual biological profiles linked to stress responsiveness and motivated behavior.\nA central aim is to develop and validate novel motivational tasks for VR and to understand how anxiety-related traits, stress physiology, and biological response profiles shape motivated behavior. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring that the human experimental pipeline is scientifically rigorous, ethically sound, well organized, and suitable for future translational applications.\nMain responsibilities\nThe postdoctoral researcher will lead the human experimental and translational phenotyping arm of the project. Responsibilities will include:\n•\nCoordinating participant recruitment, screening, scheduling, consent, testing, and retention.\n•\nImplementing the human experimental protocol with high fidelity, including acute stress and neutral control sessions, VR-based behavioral tasks, questionnaires, physiological recordings, and biological sampling.\n•\nDeveloping and maintaining standard operatin",

The EPFL employs more than 6,500 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 18,500 people, including over 14,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.\nPostdoc in Neural Decoding and Closed-Loop neuromodulation for Neurodegenerative Disorders\nMission\nWe are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop next-generation neural decoding frameworks for multimodal motor and neural data in patients with movement disorders. The project focuses on leveraging state-of-the-art machine learning approaches to predict and quantify changes in motor and cognitive function, while integrating electrophysiology (e.g., LFP, EEG) with wearable sensing for real-world, unconstrained monitoring. The successful candidate will contribute to both methodological innovation and clinical translation, working closely with patients, clinicians, and a multidisciplinary research team.\nWho we are\nThe SPARK laboratory for Adaptive Neuromodulation at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and at the University Hospital Lausanne (CHUV) is developing next-generation closed loop neuromodulation therapies to restore mobility in patients with Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.\nOur research combines engineering, neuroscience, and clinical translation to address three core objectives: (i) to comprehensively characterize mobility deficits across time, disease stages, and patient phenotypes; (ii) to uncover the neural mechanisms underlying gait and balance impairments; and (iii) to design predictive algorithms that adaptively trigger and regulate stimulation in real time.\nEmbedded within the Neuro-X Institute at EPFL and the NeuroRestore Center at CHUV-UNIL-EPFL, the lab benefits from a uniquely translational ecosystem spanning neurosurgery (Prof. J. Bloch, Prof. J. Squair), neurology (Dr. J. Bally), neuroscience (Prof. G. Courtine, Prof. M. Anderson), and neuroengineering (Prof. H. Lorach). This environment fosters close partnerships with MedTech companies such as Medtronic and ONWARD Medical to accelerate clinical translation.\nOver the past decade, our team has established a unique experimental platform combining high-resolution whole-body kinematics, muscle activity recordings, and large-scale neural signals (subcortical and cortical recordings). This integrated approach enables the development of personalized, activity-dependent therapies across neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, and stroke.\nEPFL provides a world-class environment in engineering, computation and neuroscience, enabling the develop-ment of advanced algorithms and real-time systems for real-world deployment. These capabilities are tightly integrated with CHUV’s clinical infrastructure, one of Switzerland’s five university hospitals and the only center in the French-speaking region performing deep brain stimulation for movement disorders. The position will be based at Campus Biotech in Geneva and will involve regular interactions with EPFL and CHUV teams in Lausanne.\nMain duties and responsibilities\n•\nDevelop and implement state-of-the-art neural decoding frameworks for multimodal motor and neural datasets\n•\nIdentify and validate clinically relevant neural biomarkers across therapeutic conditions.\n•\nContribute to the development of closed-loop and adaptive neuromodulation strategies, and to the deployment of next-generation neuromonitoring platforms integrating high-resolution kinematics, neurobiomechanical modeling, and neural decoding for closed-loop therapy delivery.\n•\nIntegrate neural decoding with wearable sensing systems for real-world, unconstrained monitoring\n•\nDesign and conduct experiments in close collaboration with clinicians and patients.\n•\nSup",

It will then test how acute stress alters these processes, combining behavioral performance, physiological monitoring, movement-based phenotyping, and advanced statistical and computational analyses.\nThis position is part of a broader two-position recruitment linked to the same SNSF-funded project. The call is for the position focused on\nmultimodal sensing, experimental systems, physiological and movement data, and advanced behavioral data analysis\n. A second, complementary position will focus more specifically on clinical and implementation aspects of the project.\nAlthough the project uses virtual reality as an experimental platform, prior VR experience is not necessarily required. We are\nparticularly interested in candidates with strong expertise in\nexperimental systems, physiological sensing, signal processing, human movement analysis, computational neuroscience, biomedical engineering, data science, and/or advanced quantitative behavioral research.\nThe position is funded for\nthree years\n. In line with standard EPFL procedures, the contract is issued on a\none-year basis and renewable annually\n, subject to satisfactory progress and institutional regulations.\nProject background\nUnderstanding human motivation requires methods that go beyond questionnaires and simplified computer-based tasks. This project aims to develop more naturalistic, yet highly controlled, behavioral assays in which participants make effort-based decisions and perform calibrated actions while physiological and movement data are continuously recorded.\nParticipants will complete immersive behavioral tasks designed to measure how they choose, initiate action, sustain effort, adapt to changing contingencies and respond to acute stress. The project will collect synchronized streams of trial-level behavioral data, head/hand/body positioning, movement trajectories, timing variables, ECG-derived heart rate and heart-rate variability, electrodermal activity, respiration, salivary cortisol and questionnaire-\nbased individual-\ndifference measures.\nA central aim is to identify robust behavioral and physiological signatures of motivation and stress responsiveness, including individual profiles of response. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring that these complex data streams are acquired, synchronized, quality-controlled, modeled and interpreted with the highest level of technical and analytical rigor.\nMain responsibilities\nThe postdoctoral researcher will lead the technical and quantitative core of the project. Responsibilities will include:\n•\nDeveloping, implementing, optimizing and troubleshooting immersive behavioral tasks in close interaction with the PI and lab members.\n•\nIntegrating behavioral task events with physiological acquisition systems, movement tracking, po",

The position focuses on post-shut-in seismicity and the design of safer operational protocols. Induced seismicity in geothermal systems often continues after injection or production is stopped, a phenomenon known as post-shut-in or trailing seismicity. In many cases, the largest seismic events occur after shut-in, posing challenges for hazard mitigation and operational safety. Despite extensive modelling efforts, the governing mechanisms are still not fully understood, and field observations of pressure and deformation during shut-in, that may improve our process understanding, are rare. This project exploits the unique monitoring capabilities of the Bedretto Underground Laboratory to investigate these processes and to develop experimentally validated guidelines for safer shut-in strategies.\nJob description\n•\nInvestigate pressure, deformation, and seismicity data from hydraulic stimulation experiments to derive conceptual models of post-shut-in processes\n•\nDevelop hydromechanical models to reproduce observed shut-in behaviour and test competing hypotheses (e.g., pressure diffusion vs. poroelastic effects)\n•\nDevelop/apply earthquake source physics models to understand induced seismicity processe\n•\nDesign and execute controlled hydraulic stimulation and production experiments with different shut-in protocols\n•\nQuantify how different shut-in strategies influence seismicity rates and magnitudes\n•\nDerive recommendations for optimized shut-in procedures to minimize induced seismic hazard\n•\nPublish results, present at conferences, and contribute to project reporting\nProfile\n•\nMSc degree in Engineering Geology, Geophysics, Seismology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Engineering, or a related field\n•\nInterest in induced seismicity, geomechanics, and field experiments\n•\nStrong quantitative and analytical skills\n•\nInterest in learning complex numerical modelling tools\n•\nProgramming skills (Python and/or matlab required)\n•\nWillingness to participate in underground field campaigns\n•\nAbility to work in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment\n•\nStrong communication skills in English (German and/or French is a plus)\nWorkplace\nWe offer\n•\nA fully funded PhD position (up to 4 years)\n•\nEmployment according to ETH Zurich regulations\n•\nAccess to the Bedretto Underground Laboratory\n•\nA collaborative environment bridging research, field experiments, and real-world applications\n•\nOpportunities for publications and international conference participation\nSupervision and Environment\nThe PhD candidate will be hosted at the Chair of Engineering Geology at ETH Zurich and will closely collaborate with a multidisciplinary research teams of the Swiss Seismological Service and the BedrettoLab.\nWorking, teaching and research at ETH Zurich\nWe value diversity and sustainability\nIn line with our values , ETH Zurich encourages an inclusive culture.
