The project focuses on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in noble-gas liquids, in particular liquid helium. This research aims to explore a new regime of ultrafast electron dynamics in condensed matter and to bridge the gap between gas-phase and liquid-phase HHG. The position offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of attosecond spectroscopy using state-of-the-art ultrafast laser systems and cryogenic technology. This 4-year PhD position is funded by our SNSF grant.\nProject background\nHigh-order harmonic generation has become a cornerstone of attosecond science, enabling the observation of electron dynamics on their natural timescales. While HHG is well understood in gases and increasingly explored in solids, its extension to liquids offers intriguing opportunities to study electron scattering and delocalization properties. Noble-gas liquids, and liquid helium in particular, provide a unique platform: they combine the simplicity of atomic systems with the density of condensed matter. Their relatively long electron mean free paths offer access to a regime where strong-field physics can be studied under conditions intermediate between gases and molecular liquids. This project aims to establish HHG spectroscopy in noble liquids, investigate the role of electron scattering and coherence, and explore new phenomena such as HHG in the superfluid phase of helium.\nJob description\n•\nDesign and perform experiments on high-order harmonic generation in liquid and gas-phase targets\n•\nDevelop and operate cryogenic liquid-jet systems for noble-gas liquids\n•\nImplement advanced ultrafast laser techniques (e.g., few-cycle pulses, two-colour fields, CEP stabilization)\n•\nAnalyze experimental data to extract information on electron dynamics (cut-off scaling, phase, emission times)\n•\nContribute to the development of new experimental methods in attosecond spectroscopy\n•\nPresent results at international conferences and publish in high-impact journals\nProfile\n•\nMaster’s degree in physics, physical chemistry, or a closely related field\n•\nStrong interest in ultrafast laser science, attosecond physics, or strong-field phenomena\n•\nExperimental skills and motivation to work on complex laboratory setups\n•\nAbility to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team\n•\nGood communication skills in English (spoken and written)\nBackground in one or more of the following areas is an advantage: ultrafast optics, nonlinear optics, HHG/strong-\nfield physics, vacuum technology, spectroscopy, or scientific programming (Python, MATLAB).\nWorkplace\nWe offer\n•\nA fully funded PhD position at ETH Zürich, one of the world’s leading universities\n•\nAccess to state-of-the-art ultrafast laser systems and experimental infrastructure\n•\nA stimulating, international research environment with strong collaborations\n•\nOpportunities to attend international conferences and build a scientific network\n•\nSupervision and training in cutting-edge experimental techniques in attosecond science\n•\nAttractive working conditions and benefits according to ETH Zürich standards\nWorking, teaching and research at ETH Zurich\nWe value diversity and sustainability\nIn line with our values , ETH Zurich encourages an inclusive culture. We promote equality of opportunity, value diversity and nurture a working and learning environment in which the rights and dignity of all our staff and students are respected. We have a new PhD position open on 3D geologic modeling of the eastern Penninics in the Swiss Alps.\nProject background\nThe eastern Penninic nappe stack of the Swiss Alps preserves a complex record of subduction, accretion, nappe emplacement, metamorphism, and exhumation. Its major tectonic boundaries provide an exceptional natural laboratory for reconstructing the three-dimensional architecture of the Alps and for testing how inherited geometry, lithology, and deformation history influence crustal-scale structures.\nAs part of the swisstopo swissAlps3D project, this PhD project will use 3-D geological modelling as a core tool to reconstruct the subsurface structure of the eastern Penninics in Switzerland. Over four years, the candidate will build a high-quality, 3-D geological model by integrating geological maps, structural data, cross-sections, tunnel and borehole information, geophysical constraints, and published metamorphic and thermochronological datasets. The project will involve collaboration with neighbouring modelling efforts, as well as targeted field-based work on selected tectonic boundaries within the model area. These efforts aim to link regional-scale 3-D architecture with variations in lithology, deformation fabrics, metamorphic history, and fluid-related features along major crustal interfaces. In the later stages of the project, the candidate will use the attributed 3-D model to develop a process-oriented representation of an ancient subduction-\ninterface system and explore how its geometry and internal heterogeneity may have influenced segmentation, strain localization, and slip behaviour.\nThe project, funded by swisstopo , will be hosted in the Structural Geology & Tectonics Group at ETH Zurich under the supervision of Prof. Whitney Behr, in collaboration with swisstopo and Dr. Lukas Nibourel in the Georesources Switzerland Group at ETH Zurich.\nJob description\no Compile and harmonise regional geological datasets, including maps, cross-sections, structural measurements, tunnel and borehole data,\nand published constraints\no Build a three-part 3-D geological model of the eastern Penninic nappe stack, with clear documentation of assumptions and uncertainties\no Develop a consistent structural scheme and unit legend in coordination with swisstopo and neighbouring modelling efforts\no Conduct targeted fieldwork to resolve key geometric uncertainties and collect structural observations\no Use the 3-D model to investigate the architecture, continuity, and tectonic significance of major crustal boundaries\no Prepare model documentation, reports, manuscripts, and conference presentations\nProfile\n•\nMSc in Earth Sciences/Geology or a related field\n•\nStrong interest in field geology, structural geology, tectonics, and/or 3-D geological modelling\n•\nExperience with geological mapping, GIS, cross-section construction, or 3-D modelling software is an advantage\n•\nWillingness to conduct fieldwork in Alpine terrain\n•\nSolid English skills; German is helpful but not required\n•\nCollaborative, organized, independent, and careful with complex datasets and uncertainty\nWorkplace\nWe offer\n•\nA friendly, dynamic, and interdisciplinary environment in the Structural Geology & Tectonics Group (led by Prof. Whitney Behr)\n•\nAccess to a wide range of experimental and analytical facilities at ETH Zentrum and ScopeM (Hönggerberg)\n•\nCompetitive ETH salary and benefits (see here ); the PhD position is funded for four years\nWorking, teaching and research at ETH Zurich\nWe value diversity and sustainability\nIn line with our values , ETH Zurich encourages an inclusive culture. It is affiliated with the Institute for Preservation and Construction History (IDB) as well as the Institute for Technology in Architecture (ITA) .\nKnowledge of traditional construction methods, materials, architectural design principles and building processes is essential for a professional and responsible handling of historic buildings. With regard to the future development of the building stock it seems equally important to consider younger and even current processes. New building materials, construction methods and ’trends’ are increasingly affecting architecture and an accelerated implementation of new ideas and technologies can be recognised in the building sector. Currently, there is a lack of knowledge about the aging and reparability of such new constructions and research on long-term consequences for the building stock seems inadequate.\nResearch focusses on diverse building stocks, both older and younger (as well as very young), questions of their value as monuments and challenges concerning their conservation. Within this context, the structurally outstanding engineering works in Switzerland as well as the built examples of newly developed construction processes and methods are of special interest. Teaching activities include elective courses and core seminars which allow students to study and discuss current issues in-depth. The lecture concentrates on the theoretical and practical basics of preservation. Furthermore, the professorship offers the academic continuing education programs which comprehensively and methodologically combine high academic standards with practical relevance and impart specific professional skills.\nJob description\nAs a postdoctoral researcher, your responsibilities will include:\n•\nFormulating and writing proposals for research grant applications (SNF, Innosuisse, EU Horizon, etc.)\n•\nContributing to ongoing research projects, including scientific publication efforts\n•\nCo-leading publication projects\n•\nSupporting teaching activities within the professorship, including further education programmes (MAS/CAS)\n•\nSupporting the supervision of doctoral researchers within the professorship, and\n•\nTaking on short- and medium-term projects within the framework of the Competence Center for Preservation at IDB\nProfile\n•\nYou have a Master’s degree and a PhD in architecture, civil engineering, art history or technology history, or related fields\n•\nYou have experience of applying for and successfully obtaining third-party funding for research projects\n•\nKnowledge of Swiss and international architectural heritage and building cultures is an asset\n•\nYou can demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English\nWorkplace\nWe offer\n•\nYour job with impact: Become part of ETH Zurich, which not only supports your professional development, but also actively contributes to positive change in society\n•\nAn interdisciplinary and diverse team of researchers in the fields of architecture, preservation, art and architectural history, building research, innovative building technologies and sustainability.\n•\nYou can expect numerous benefits , such as public transport season tickets and car sharing, a wide range of sports offered by the ASVZ , childcare and attractive pension benefits\nWorking, teaching and research at ETH Zurich\nWe value diversity and sustainability\nIn line with our values , ETH Zurich encourages an inclusive culture.
