PhD Position: Order-from-Disorder in Frustrated Quantum Magnets
100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Neutron Scattering and Magnetism Group, Physics Department, ETH Zurich, is currently looking to fill a PhD position on experimental studies of frustrated quantum magnets using neutron scattering, uSR and other techniques.
Geometric frustration in quantum systems leads to a tight competition between qualitatively new collective spin states, such as topological structures, quantum spin liquids, multipolar ordered phases and spin-supersolids, to name only a few. Each state is characterized by its own set of elementary excitations that often have no analogue in semi-classical physics.
The winner of this competition is usually determined by mechanisms known as thermal and quantum order-from-disorder. Controlling these offers a way to manipulate and study such exotic systems. The successful candidate will realize this control experimentally in carefully selected prototypical magnetic materials.
Job description

The work will involve synthesis and growth of single crystal samples, as well as their characterization with X-ray diffraction

The samples will be further characteried with optical spectroscopy experiments, as well as magnetothermodynamic, magnetomechanical and magnetoacoustic measurements at mK-temperatures and high magnetic fields, using equipment available in our laboratory

The research will culminate in neutron scattering, ultra-high-field, and muon spin rotation studies at state of the art large-scale user facilities in Switzerland, France, Germany, UK, Japan and the USA

Data analysis and modeling will be done in collaboration with research groups that specialize in theoretical and numerical calculations
Profile

The successful candidate is expected to be actively involved in every phase of the project and to take the lead whenever possible

No prior experience in neutron scattering is required, but a solid background in laboratory work and analysis of experimental data is a must

Since the project is based around rather complex concepts in modern physics, a solid theoretical background in quantum mechanics, statistical physics and quantum solid state physics is absolutely essential

Good computer skills are a plus
