Description du poste

Company Description
MF Group is a subsidiary of Riverty and part of the Bertelsmann Group. Around 120 employees work across two locations in Switzerland to make invoice-based purchasing with flexible installment payments even simpler and safer for Swiss retailers. As a leading Swiss provider, we are a key partner for the retail sector, combining credit checks, fraud prevention, invoicing, and pre-financing into a comprehensive end‑to‑end solution.
In addition to our straightforward invoice payment solutions—both online and in‑store—we offer private customers flexible cash loans. We also issue a variety of payment cards. Our strength lies in managing complex projects where multiple sales channels and payment methods interact seamlessly. We work with nearly all major brick‑and‑mortar and online retailers in Switzerland, actively shaping the future of payments.
Job Description
To support our continued growth, we are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (m/f/d) to join our team and drive the evolution of our core financial platform. This is a full-time position with a permanent contract, based in Chiasso.
We build and maintain core financial services that power MF Group products. This includes systems for tracking customer account balances, orchestrating invoice creation and distribution, and ensuring financial data flows accurately across merchants and platforms.
Our current backend stack is built primarily with Java, the Spring ecosystem, and Oracle/MySql databases, supporting established monolithic applications where data consistency, performance, and reliability are critical. At the same time, new solutions are increasingly developed as microservices running on Kubernetes, following event-driven architecture principles with Kafka.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will tackle meaningful technical challenges across ledgers, invoice flows, and digital payment solutions in a dynamic, informal environment. From analysis to testing, you will help shape new features, evolve our architecture, integrate payment systems, and deliver secure, scalable, user-friendly experiences for merchants and consumers.
In particular, you will:
Design, build, test, and operate backend services that support payments, invoicing, ledger flows, and financial data consistency.
Help shape the technical direction within your domain, making trade-offs explicit and aligning them with business impact, reliability, maintainability, and delivery speed.
Help decompose our monolithic financial platform into clearer domain-oriented services.
Improve system quality through simpler architecture, better observability, cleaner APIs, automated testing, and reduced operational complexity.
Use production data and operational signals to identify risks, propose improvements, and follow them through with the team.
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers: conduct code reviews, share architectural context, and raise the technical bar of the team.
Qualifications
What will help you succeed in the role:
You’re a seasoned software engineer (5+ years) with experience building enterprise applications with Java and Spring, combined with a solid understanding of software design principles, distributed systems, relational databases, SQL, and data modeling.
You take ownership of your work, constructively challenge assumptions, and translate improvement opportunities into practical, maintainable solutions.
You thrive in collaborative environments, value diverse perspectives, and communicate clearly in Italian and English across disciplines
Experience building scalable, resilient, and highly available backend systems.
How to stand out:
You combine a strong quality mindset with a pragmatic approach to reducing complexity in existing systems, using automated testing as a key enabler of reliable software delivery.
Experience decomposing a monolith into bounded, domain-oriented services.
Experience designing and implementing event-driven architectures, particularly with Kafka or similar messaging platforms.
Experience mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards.
Hands-on experience with AI tools for coding, code review, testing, documentation, skills, prompts, instructions, and plugins.
Additional Information
What we offer:
Small engineering teams with visible technical impact.
Short delivery cycles and direct access to production and stakeholders.
A pragmatic agile environment focused on continuous value delivery.
Training and development opportunities through Riverty and Bertelsmann training sessions and customized development plans.
A hybrid work model with home office, which lets you combine on-site teamwork and remote work to create the professional experience that best suits your life.
Benefit from a comprehensive range of employee benefits and exclusive discounts designed to support your professional and personal well-being.
Please note that benefits could be different depending on agreement details, and they may change over time. We'd be delighted to explore these benefits in greater depth during an interview.
