In line with standard EPFL procedures, the contract is issued on a one-year basis and renewable annually, subject to satisfactory progress and institutional regulations.\nProject background\nUnderstanding how stress influences motivated behavior requires experimental approaches that combine rigorous behavioral testing with careful assessment of individual differences and biological stress responses. In this project, participants will complete immersive behavioral tasks designed to measure how they choose, initiate action, sustain effort, adapt to changing contingencies, and respond to acute stress.\nThe study will combine a standardized acute stress manipulation and behavioral assessments in VR, physiological monitoring, and biological sampling. In addition to endocrine measures, we are eventually interested -in the second part of the project implementation- in integrating broader hormonal, metabolic, inflammatory, and mitochondrial-\nrelated biomarkers to better characterize individual biological profiles linked to stress responsiveness and motivated behavior.\nA central aim is to develop and validate novel motivational tasks for VR and to understand how anxiety-related traits, stress physiology, and biological response profiles shape motivated behavior. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring that the human experimental pipeline is scientifically rigorous, ethically sound, well organized, and suitable for future translational applications.\nMain responsibilities\nThe postdoctoral researcher will lead the human experimental and translational phenotyping arm of the project. Responsibilities will include:\n•\nCoordinating participant recruitment, screening, scheduling, consent, testing, and retention.\n•\nImplementing the human experimental protocol with high fidelity, including acute stress and neutral control sessions, VR-based behavioral tasks, questionnaires, physiological recordings, and biological sampling.\n•\nDeveloping and maintaining standard operating procedures for participant flow, stress testing, biological sample collection, sample processin",

We are looking for someone with prior background in either fungal or transposon comparative genomics, who can explore the diversity and evolution of Starship transposons and the genes and transposons they carry within plant infecting fungal species.\nThis position forms one pillar of a three-pillared research project, where you will be partnered with other experts in biochemistry and cell biology. The goal is to build a collaborative interdisciplinary team that uses population genomics to support the development an implementation of working experimental transposon models in the lab.\nProject background\nHorizontal gene transfer (HGT) enables the spread of pathogenicity genes between microbes and can therefore drive the emergence of novel diseases\n.\nIn pathogenic fungi, an emerging global threat to both humans and our crops, the mechanisms that facilitate HGT remain unknown. Recent work has uncovered a novel group of giant transposons called Starships, which have moved virulence, metal tolerance and other fitness associated genes horizontally between fungal species. This transposon has been captured independently by two different Starship transposons, Sanctuary and Horizon with evidence of other captures in other fungal species. We seek to understand the evolutionary history and horizontal transfer of the ToxTA transposon in natural populations of all fungal species in which it is found. This includes over 300 publicly accessible genomes as well as several dozen long-read assemblies from the lab’s internal collection. The position focuses on post-shut-in seismicity and the design of safer operational protocols. Induced seismicity in geothermal systems often continues after injection or production is stopped, a phenomenon known as post-shut-in or trailing seismicity. In many cases, the largest seismic events occur after shut-in, posing challenges for hazard mitigation and operational safety. Despite extensive modelling efforts, the governing mechanisms are still not fully understood, and field observations of pressure and deformation during shut-in, that may improve our process understanding, are rare. This project exploits the unique monitoring capabilities of the Bedretto Underground Laboratory to investigate these processes and to develop experimentally validated guidelines for safer shut-in strategies.\nJob description\n•\nInvestigate pressure, deformation, and seismicity data from hydraulic stimulation experiments to derive conceptual models of post-shut-in processes\n•\nDevelop hydromechanical models to reproduce observed shut-in behaviour and test competing hypotheses (e.g., pressure diffusion vs. poroelastic effects)\n•\nDevelop/apply earthquake source physics models to understand induced seismicity processe\n•\nDesign and execute controlled hydraulic stimulation and production experiments with different shut-in protocols\n•\nQuantify how different shut-in strategies influence seismicity rates and magnitudes\n•\nDerive recommendations for optimized shut-in procedures to minimize induced seismic hazard\n•\nPublish results, present at conferences, and contribute to project reporting\nProfile\n•\nMSc degree in Engineering Geology, Geophysics, Seismology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Engineering, or a related field\n•\nInterest in induced seismicity, geomechanics, and field experiments\n•\nStrong quantitative and analytical skills\n•\nInterest in learning complex numerical modelling tools\n•\nProgramming skills (Python and/or matlab required)\n•\nWillingness to participate in underground field campaigns\n•\nAbility to work in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment\n•\nStrong communication skills in English (German and/or French is a plus)\nWorkplace\nWe offer\n•\nA fully funded PhD position (up to 4 years)\n•\nEmployment according to ETH Zurich regulations\n•\nAccess to the Bedretto Underground Laboratory\n•\nA collaborative environment bridging research, field experiments, and real-world applications\n•\nOpportunities for publications and international conference participation\nSupervision and Environment\nThe PhD candidate will be hosted at the Chair of Engineering Geology at ETH Zurich and will closely collaborate with a multidisciplinary research teams of the Swiss Seismological Service and the BedrettoLab.\nWorking, teaching and research at ETH Zurich\nWe value diversity and sustainability\nIn line with our values , ETH Zurich encourages an inclusive culture. It is affiliated with the Institute for Preservation and Construction History (IDB) as well as the Institute for Technology in Architecture (ITA) .\nKnowledge of traditional construction methods, materials, architectural design principles and building processes is essential for a professional and responsible handling of historic buildings. With regard to the future development of the building stock it seems equally important to consider younger and even current processes. New building materials, construction methods and ’trends’ are increasingly affecting architecture and an accelerated implementation of new ideas and technologies can be recognised in the building sector. Currently, there is a lack of knowledge about the aging and reparability of such new constructions and research on long-term consequences for the building stock seems inadequate.\nResearch focusses on diverse building stocks, both older and younger (as well as very young), questions of their value as monuments and challenges concerning their conservation. Within this context, the structurally outstanding engineering works in Switzerland as well as the built examples of newly developed construction processes and methods are of special interest. Teaching activities include elective courses and core seminars which allow students to study and discuss current issues in-depth. The lecture concentrates on the theoretical and practical basics of preservation. Furthermore, the professorship offers the academic continuing education programs which comprehensively and methodologically combine high academic standards with practical relevance and impart specific professional skills.\nJob description\nAs a postdoctoral researcher, your responsibilities will include:\n•\nFormulating and writing proposals for research grant applications (SNF, Innosuisse, EU Horizon, etc.)\n•\nContributing to ongoing research projects, including scientific publication efforts\n•\nCo-leading publication projects\n•\nSupporting teaching activities within the professorship, including further education programmes (MAS/CAS)\n•\nSupporting the supervision of doctoral researchers within the professorship, and\n•\nTaking on short- and medium-term projects within the framework of the Competence Center for Preservation at IDB\nProfile\n•\nYou have a Master’s degree and a PhD in architecture, civil engineering, art history or technology history, or related fields\n•\nYou have experience of applying for and successfully obtaining third-party funding for research projects\n•\nKnowledge of Swiss and international architectural heritage and building cultures is an asset\n•\nYou can demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English\nWorkplace\nWe offer\n•\nYour job with impact: Become part of ETH Zurich, which not only supports your professional development, but also actively contributes to positive change in society\n•\nAn interdisciplinary and diverse team of researchers in the fields of architecture, preservation, art and architectural history, building research, innovative building technologies and sustainability.\n•\nYou can expect numerous benefits , such as public transport season tickets and car sharing, a wide range of sports offered by the ASVZ , childcare and attractive pension benefits\nWorking, teaching and research at ETH Zurich\nWe value diversity and sustainability\nIn line with our values , ETH Zurich encourages an inclusive culture.
